Abstract: Roads are a central element of transportation systems, enabling economic and social development, fostering territorial cohesion and facilitating the movement of people and cargo. Governments have devoted significant financial resources to developing and improving their road networks, and are still facing increasing pressure to ensure proper maintenance and payments to those concessionaires that developed roads under public–private partnership arrangements. As in other sectors, digitalization is paving a way to… Show more

“…According to Cruz and Sarmento (2018), road infrastructure digitization may be divided into two categories: those that are asset-related and those that are service-related. The major focus of this research, as illustrated in Figure 2, is not the study of service-related computer technology since it is oriented towards supporting infrastructure.…”

“…Construction workers and architects constantly try to execute innovative and novel ideas in construction projects that are becoming more complex and massive (Alshawi and Faraj 2002;Stoyanova 2020). Governments have invested substantial financial resources in creating and improving road networks, as roads are a critical component of transportation systems, and digitalization is paving the way for significant changes in the way infrastructure is created, operated, and financed, and has far-reaching implications across a project's lifecycle (Alaloul et al, 2018;Cruz and Sarmento 2018). There has been resistance against digitalization in the construction of transportation infrastructure projects.…”

“…Manual collection of tolls still has to be done-as not all drivers have electronic tolling-and accident assistance is an essential service for users which has to be maintained. Despite the extensive digitalisation and the high degree of automatic payments that BRISA benefits from [27], at each highway exit, there is still a need to maintain at least one manual collection of tolls which has to be in function 24/7. Additionally, the highway security staff still need to be present, for although levels of traffic have reduced substantially during the pandemic, there is still the need for automobile assistance to be available on a 24/7 basis.…”

“…We can note more general research related to maximizing the cost of transport projects when using digitalization technologies, in particular Cruz, C.O., Sarmento, J.M. [13]. Valuation procedures of the cargo traffic processing scenarios for freight trains and at the stations using operating work simulation are described by Schneider M , Nießen N. [14].…”
