Maxent modeling for predicting the spatial distribution of three raptors in the Sanjiangyuan National Park, China

Abstract: Upland buzzard (Buteo hemilasius), Saker falcon (Falco cherrug), and Himalayan vulture (Gyps himalayensis) are three common large raptors in the Sanjiangyuan National Park (SNP), China's first national park. Among them, Upland buzzard and Saker falcon play a significant role in controlling plateau rodent populations and reducing the transmission of pathogens carried by rodents. The Himalayan vulture can provide services for the redistribution and recycling of nutrients in the ecosystem, and play an irreplaceab… Show more

“…We chose Maxent due to its popularity in the literature 30 , its ease of use, and its ability to model complex relationships among covariates lacking in other methods 83,84 . Additionally, Maxent performs consistently well across ecosystems, species, and scales 32,80,[85][86][87][88][89][90] . Maxent models attempt to approximate the probability of a species presence, conditioned on environmental variables, using presence-only data supplemented with model-generated background locations 83 .…”

“…Sanjiangyuan, or Source of Three Rivers, refers to the area's role as the headwaters of China's three largest rivers (Yangtze river, Yellow river and Lancang river). The region has global influence and dictates China's ecosystem (Zhang, Jiang, et al, 2019). A variety F I G U R E 1 Tibetan brown bear (Ursus arctos pruinosus) captured by camera trapping in the Yangtze River Zone of Sanjiangyuan National Park, China of endemic alpine flora and fauna constitutes Sanjiangyuan's excessive biological diversity.…”

As China's first national park, it has become an exhibition area of nature protection and ecological culture heritage on the Tibetan Plateau (Zhang, Jiang, et al, 2019). Unfortunately, it is also one of the most sensitive regions to climate change Wang, Song, & Hu, 2010).…”
