Mastigação e deglutição em mulheres jovens com desordem temporomandibular

Abstract: TMD presence resulted on a higher frequency of myofunctional alterations during masticatory and swallowing functions. A greater distance from hyoid bone to the mandible in addition with the presence of painful symptom can justify, partly, the atypical behaviors of the tongue and lips observed on TMD group. The TMD repercussion on alimentaires functions in a young age group justifies the importance of an earlier diagnosis and therapeutic intervention in these individuals.

“…These results anticipate that other variables not considered in this study, such as mixed dentition period, severe open-bite, presence of dental flaws, poor dental state, malocclusion, temporomandibular disorders and bruxism may be related to changes in clinical characteristics of mastication and not to the facial type [26][27][28][29] . The results found in the electromyographic evaluation of this study reinforce our findings of the clinical evaluation, i.e.…”

“…A recent study 33 found that effort of the lips and exaggerated involvement of the perioral muscles occurred more frequently in a group with TMD. This finding is corroborated by the presence of painful symptoms.…”

“…There was no difference in the deglutition function, but there was a lower frequency of the alternating bilateral chewing pattern in the group with hypermobility compared with the group without hypermobility. the masticatory muscles and hence, the stomatognathic functions 33 . In this study, the aspects relative to deglutition appeared to be normal, except for the presence of atypical contractions during deglutition, which occurred in both groups, with no difference between them.…”

“…Several factors can lead to compensations observed during the chewing function. The masticatory pattern may be altered, with unilateral predominance or chronic unilateral mastication (7) , which are often found in individuals with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) (8,9) . This masticatory pattern promotes differentiated stimuli between the working side and the balance side of chewing, and may be associated with inharmonic development of the facial skeleton and with imbalance of the masticatory musculature (9,10) .…”
