“…Each of these resistant genes is effective to a series of blast pathogen races, so gene pyramiding is still a useful method for breeding new resistant varieties [110]. A number of studies show a wide range of resistance of Piz-5 that is combined with Pi1 to blast pathogens [111,112]. Thippeswamy et al [113] also reported that the CO39 pyramid carrying Pi-1 and Piz-5 genes showed higher resistance in comparison with Pi-1 or Piz-5.…”

“…Chen et al [9] studied the spectrum of resistance conditioned by Pi2 gene in rice by using C101A51 and found that it was resistant to 455 Philippine isolates when inoculated in greenhouse tests and suggested that Pi2 could condition resistance to many lineages of M. oryzae. The broad-spectrum resistance of Pi2 (Piz-5) and Pi-1 were complementary to most lineages of blast pathogen in India because these two genes are dominant in nature and their resistance break down is difficult by pathogens but they work in isolation too [10]. The lineage exclusion assay found that none of the 25 pathogen lineages of M. oryzae of southern India was able to overcome the blast resistance afforded by Pi1 ?…”
