Abstract: The biodiversity of the oceans is a hot topic, as witnessed by the announcements I received for three international symposia/workshops on marine biodiversity in the fall of 1998. It is also a broad topic encompassing the description of global diversity patterns, molecular studies of gene flow on single shores, and application of “integrated coastal zone management” to species preservation in multiple‐use ecosystems.
