Mapping the Emergence of Synthetic Biology

Abstract: In this paper, we apply an original scientometric analyses to a corpus comprising synthetic biology (SynBio) publications in Thomson Reuters Web of Science to characterize the emergence of this new scientific field. Three results were drawn from this empirical investigation. First, despite the exponential growth of publications, the study of population level statistics (newcomers proportion, collaboration network structure) shows that SynBio has entered a stabilization process since 2010. Second, the mapping o… Show more

“…Bibliometrics -broadly defined as the statistical analysis of scientific literature -brings valuable insights on the development of research areas bridging several scientific communities. It has recently been applied to studies of the emergence of synthetic biology (Raimbault, Cointet & Joly, 2016) and global health (Weisz, Cambrosio & Cointet, 2017). Indeed, it enables one to trace the social organization of emerging fields (e.g.…”

“…If these findings are applied to what is known in science studies about the field of synthetic biology, one may expect a rather low number of reviews since the field is mostly understood as still emerging (Raimbault, Cointet, and Joly 2016) and rather heterogeneous with various different epistemic orientations (Kastenhofer 2013). In order to establish a relationship between the type or content of reviews and the state of the field, I propose to more closely examine the specific ways of how review articles present, order, or deal with research in the field.…”

“…This discipline is linked to the humanities and therefore, the methods and strategies developed by scientometrists have not yet perfused in Biology. The strategy has been used to analyze the emergence of synthetic biology but by a team of sociologists [1].…”
