Manufacture of fiber‐reinforced composites by microwave assisted pultrusion

Abstract: A brief review of the potential for microwave heating in the manufacture of fiberreinforced composites is presented, with particular emphasis on the Microwave Assisted Pultrusion (MAP). Manufacture of a 6 mm cylindrical glass reinforced profile, based on a number of latent-cure epoxy resins by MAP is described. These materials combine room temperature stability (long pot life) with rapid crosslinking at elevated temperature. The measured line speeds exceeded 2 m/min, using approximately 800 W of applied microw… Show more

“…The microwave assisted pultrusion process (Methven et al ., 2000) is an innovative variant of the pultrusion process. Microwave heating (Metaxas and Meredith, 1983) characterized by a high frequency electromagnetic energy source is a fast, instantaneous, non-contact and volumetric heating, and therefore, very interesting for materials processing.…”

“…Due to the complexity of the multiphysical problem to be solved for a microwave assisted pultrusion process, initially these processes have been analyzed experimentally [4,5]. A brief review of the potential for microwave heating in the pultrusion manufacturing processes of fiber reinforced composites is presented in paper [6]. Recently, due to the rapid development of the finite element software for a solution of multiphysical problems, a computational modeling of the microwave assisted pultrusion processes has started.…”
