Mandible reconstruction using patient-specific pre-bent reconstruction plates: comparison of standard and transfer key methods

Abstract: The TK-method was more accurate than the ST-method in a clinical trial. The TK-method was effective and accurate for mandible reconstruction using pre-bent fixation plates.

“…Only 13 of the 48 studies mentioning reduced operation room time and supported this statement with actual numbers or statistics [ 3 , 39 , 44 , 72 , 74 , 78 , 81 , 84 , 99 , 107 , 117 , 119 , 120 ]. In 80 (89.89 %) of the publications, the printed part showed good accuracy, although this was only supported numerically in four studies [ 3 , 81 , 97 , 106 ]. Exposure to ionizing radiation was not mentioned in 77 (86.51 %) of the publications, and eight mentioned decreased exposures [ 3 , 59 61 , 74 , 79 , 101 , 107 ].…”

“…Surgical guides are the most popular medical application of 3D printing, with mentions in 137 of the 270 papers (50.74 %) [ 10 , 15 , 30 , 31 , 39 , 48 , 59 , 60 , 62 , 70 , 71 , 73 , 74 , 76 , 77 , 79 81 , 83 , 84 , 86 , 88 , 89 , 92 , 93 , 96 98 , 106 , 108 , 111 – 113 , 118 , 124 226 ]. Apart from orthopedics (guides for knee arthroplasties), 3D-printed surgical guides were also used in neurosurgery, dental surgery, spinal surgery, and maxillofacial surgery.…”

“… 115 To overcome the complications of conventional surgical plates, 3D technologies have facilitated the production of patient-specific pre-bent surgical plates. 63 , 116 - 119 Pre-bent selective laser 41 sintering (SLS) or milled titanium surgical plates with specific configurations, including the 3D architecture, width, thickness and screw holes, can be individualized for each patient using the patient’s original printed contours. 120 This type of plate has threaded screw holes with different angles and can tolerate a greater number of screws than a conventional plate and has a minimum distance between screws of 5.5 mm compared with the 8 mm of a conventional plate.…”

“…Within last few years patient-customized craniofacial reconstructions become new standard in maxillofacial surgery. Patient specific 3D printed models can be used as a template for pre-shaping titanium mesh [1][2][3][4][5][6] or bone grafts [1,7,8] before implantation, to simulate osteotomies [1,9,10], to improve cancer resection techniques [11,12] and to better plan the surgery [7]. There are even possibilities to produce patient-specific implants using either subtractive [2,13] or additive methods like selective laser sintering [6,[14][15][16][17].…”

“…The most commonly 3D printing technique in maxillofacial surgery is stereolithography using liquid resin which is photopolymerised with a laser beam [6]. Models created with this material have already proven their usefulness in medicine [1,4,14,[17][18][19][20][21]. Three-dimensional objects manufactured in such 3D printer are durable enough to successfully undergo sterilization and serve as a template during the surgery.…”
