Management of Optic Disk Pit-associated Macular Detachment with Human Amniotic Membrane Patch

Abstract: Purpose: To report a new surgical technique involving a human amniotic membrane patch (hAM) to solve a serous macular detachment associated with optic nerve head pit. Methods: Three eyes of three patients affected by macular detachment associated with optic nerve head pit were enrolled. A 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy were performed. hAM patch was implanted inside the optic nerve pit; air was used as endotamponade. The patients were instructed to maintain face-down position for the first days after surgery.Res… Show more

“…Rizzo et al [ 5 ] recently described an innovative surgical technique for management of ODP-M with 1.5-mm graft in treatment naïve adult patients. We used a larger 3-mm graft, due to the larger size of the ODP.…”

“…Rizzo et al [ 5 ] recently used human amniotic membrane graft (hAMG) for the treatment of ODP-M in treatment naïve adult patients. We report a case of recurrent ODP-M in a pediatric case treated with hAMG that resulted in rapid resolution.…”

“…Rizzo et al proposed three cases of ODP-M treated using an hAM plug positioned inside the optic disc pit. The sub-retinal fluid reduced during the first 6 months after surgery and the average visual acuity improved from 20/40 to 25/20 at the 6th month after surgery [ 34 ] ( Figure 2 ).…”

“…The hAM application for retinal pathologies was extended to treat large macular tears [ 31 ], high myopic retinal detachment associated with MH [ 32 ], paravascular tears [ 33 ], serous macular detachment associated with optic pits [ 34 ], complicated retinal detachment [ 30 ] and advanced age related macular degeneration (AMD) [ 35 ].…”

“…Human amniotic membrane (HAM) has been reported to be safe for intraocular use; moreover, as Rizzo et al described, it appears to promote retinal healing [6][7][8]. Lyophilization of HAM maintains its histological structure [9] and, at the same time, confers beneficial features regarding its storage, biosafety and surgical handling.…”
