Management of adverse reactions induced by chemotherapy drugs

Abstract: Purpose of reviewThere is a broad spectrum of chemotherapy-induced adverse reactions. Hypersensitivity reactions are being extensively studied as they can affect the ideal treatment. The goal of this review is to describe the current management of adverse reactions to chemotherapy, focusing on hypersensitivity events. Recent findingsThe range of possible desensitization protocols is increasing, as well as the delabeling algorithms and diagnostic tools. One-bag desensitization protocols, omalizumab use in immed… Show more

“…Among these methods, chemotherapy is a powerful approach, but it's limited due to side effects and ltration by immune system 16 . Side effects of chemotherapy include Alopecia, bone marrow suppression, stomach erosion, and cardiomyopathy 17 . As a result, there is a need to develop new treatments that only harm the tumor 18 .…”

“…The situation has become increasingly complicated with the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors which can augment T-cell priming and precipitate severe reactions to previously tolerated drugs [6]. Abreu et al [7] discuss the management of chemotherapy reactions and the potential requirement of drug desensitization. A detailed assessment of the patient is required to de-label those not hypersensitive to avoid treatment restriction or unnecessary desensitization.…”
