Management Considerations in Extraocular Sebaceous Carcinoma

Abstract: Extraocular SCs present unique challenges that may benefit from multidisciplinary management. Surgical removal with negative pathologic margins is the mainstay treatment of extraocular SC. Additional studies will help clarify the optimal diagnostic workup and adjuvant treatment of patients.

“…Local therapy in the form of cryotherapy, topical chemotherapy, and radiotherapy is also employed for optimizing the outcome . Because of rarity, treatment of EOSC has largely been extrapolated from that of OSC . The clinical behavior and treatment of these patients are often derived from isolated case report or very small case series which have several limitations.…”

“…4 Because of rarity, treatment of EOSC has largely been extrapolated from that of OSC. 5 The clinical behavior and treatment of these patients are often derived from isolated case report or very small case series which have several limitations. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to highlight the demography, pattern of care, survival, and impact of different prognostic factors on the outcome of the uncommon extraocular sebaceous carcinoma.…”

“…El carcinoma sebáceo (CS) es una neoplasia anexial cutánea poco común, potencialmente agresiva 1,2 . Si bien puede aparecer en cualquier localización donde se encuentren glándulas sebáceas, el 70% se presenta en cabeza y cuello 3,4 . En cuanto a su epidemiología, alcanza entre 0,2% al 4,6% de todas las neoplasias cutáneas malignas 5 .…”

“…Standard surgical resection with wide margins and Mohs micrographic surgery are common treatments for SC (3,8,9). However, to date, there are no tumour-specific staging system or management guidelines for EOSC (5). The aim of this study was to determine the demographic, clinical and histopathological characteris tics, treatment strategy and prognosis of SC in a series of patients and to compare these results with published data.…”

“…SC most commonly presents as a gradually enlarging, firm nodule or as an ulcerated papule or plaque in elderly individuals (1), and can mimic basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, pyogenic granuloma, metastatic tumour or benign adnexal tumours (1,2). Diagnosis of SC is therefore often delayed (5, 6) and confirmed only by histology (1,3,5). The disease is classified as either ocular (OSC) or extraocular (EOSC) depending on the location of the primary lesion (1-3, 6).…”
