Malignant transformation arising from mature cystic teratoma of the ovary: A report of six cases

Abstract: Early detection of malignant transformation arising from MCT is mandatory for treating patients, but in most patients malignancy was detected intraoperatively. Surgical cytoreduction with a complete staging procedure and adjuvant treatment may be reasonable for stage IC. Additionally, prognosis is better when the tumor is completely excised and does not extend beyond the capsule.

“…In two-thirds of cases, mature elements reflecting differentiation into normally derived cells from all three embryonic germ layers are present. However, any of these constituents has the potential to undergo malignant transformation and the incidence of such cases was reported to be 1–2% in mature ovarian teratomas (6, 7). The most common histologic type of malignant transformation in ovarian teratoma is squamous-cell carcinoma, reported in 70–80% of cases; other types of differentiation including adenocarcinoma, melanoma, and carcinoid tumor, are relatively rare (7, 8).…”

“…[8] . Due to the high density of ectoderm in these tumors, not surprisingly the most common malignant tumor arising from them is squamous cell carcinoma(SCC), [2,7] while various adenocarcinomas, carcinoid tumors, melanomas and various soft tissue sarcomas have also been reported. [2,4,9] CASE REPORT: A 36 years old female presented with the complaints of abdominal pain, abdominal fullness and difficulty in periods since 6 months.…”

“…[1,3] The potential of undergoing malignant transformation(one or more of the three different mature elements of MCTs) is present, typically in postmenopausal women, with a frequency of 0.17-3%. [6,7] Most of MCTs are detected 10-15 years before secondary malignant transformation possibly as a result of exposure in different pelvic carcinogens which trigger malignant changes in mature tissue. [8] .…”
