“…Although the only significant differences in anal sex role preferences occurred between non-Mexican Latinos and Whites, with the former having a greater preference for this pattern, all Latino MSM were more likely than White and Black MSM to have preferences for insertive or receptive oral sex. This finding, though not specifically for anal sex, is supportive of prior studies documenting sex role preferences among Latino men in the United States (Carballo-Diéguez et al, 2004;Carrier & Magaña, 1991;Muñoz-Laboy, 2004) and Latin American men abroad (Cáceres & Rosasco, 1999;Carrier, 1976;DeMoya & García, 1996;Kutsche & Page, 1991;Lumsden, 1996;Parker, 1989;Taylor, 1978). It is likely that Latin American machismo, which emphasizes activo and pasivo roles according to insertive and receptive homosexual acts, manifests itself in the sexual behaviors of Latino men in the United States.…”

“…This highly gendered system of sexual relations, the activo/pasivo phenomenon, has been noted as pervasive throughout Latin America. Scholars have specifically examined its presence in Brazil (Parker, 1989(Parker, , 1991(Parker, , 1999, Costa Rica (Kutsche & Page, 1991;Schifter, 2000;Schifter & Aggleton, 1999), Cuba (Lumsden, 1996), the Dominican Republic (DeMoya & García, 1996, Mexico (Almaguer, 1991;Carrier, 1976Carrier, , 1985Carrier, , 1989aCarrier, , 1989bCarrier, , 1995Paz, 1985;Taylor, 1978Taylor, , 1986, Nicaragua (Lancaster, 1988(Lancaster, , 1992, and Peru (Cáceres, 2002;Cáceres & Rosasco, 1999).…”

“…Groundbreaking work done primarily in Mexico and Central America delineated the classic activo–pasivo paradigm that has traditionally been considered to govern sexual interactions between men in Latin America [1-5]. These studies described gendered constructions of sexual identity where sexual penetration is aligned with masculine heterosexuality, and being penetrated with femininized homosexuality.…”

“…155 While many have found that Latino men prefer traditional sex roles 154. This is reflected by research conducted in Brazil (Parker 1989(Parker , 1991(Parker , 1999, Costa Rica (Kutsche and Page 1991;Schifter, 2000;Schifter and Aggleton 1999), Cuba (Lumsden 1996), the Dominican Republic (DeMoya andGarcía 1996, 1999), Mexico (Almaguer 1991;Carrier 1976bCarrier , 1985Carrier , 1989aCarrier , 1989bCarrier , 1995Paz 1985;Taylor 1978Taylor , 1986, Nicaragua (Lancaster 1988(Lancaster , 1992, and Peru (Cáceres, 2002;Cáceres and Rosasco, 1999).…”

“…penetrated, in anal intercourse is still considered the determining factor of Brazilian men's sexuality. within same-sex relationships (Cáceres and Rosasco 1999;Carrier 1976b;Clark et al 2013;DeMoya and García 1996;Jeffries 2009;Klein 1999;Kutsche and Page 1991;Lumsden 1996;Parker 1989Parker , 1991Prieur 1998a;Taylor, 1978), other findings demonstrate a growing population of versatile modernos, internacionales, and individuals who otherwise take on both the active and the pasivo role, often determined by the pair's relative gender performances (Carballo-Diéguez et al 2004;Carrier 1995;Carrillo 1999Carrillo , 2002Carrillo and Fontdevila 2011;Coxon et al 1993;Harry 1977;Sanderson 1994;Schifter-Skilor and Madrigal-Pana 1992;Wegesin and Meyer-Bahlburh 2000;Willcox 1981). Nicolette Severson et al (2013) suggest that such developments may be due to the different social contexts in which newer generations have developed their sexual identities; the younger participants in their study had more opportunities to interact with LGBT individuals and communities, and increased queer visibility made it easier to come out at younger ages.…”
