Making use of all the networks around us

Abstract: Poor connectivity is common when we use wireless networks on the go. A natural way to tackle the problem is to take advantage of the multiple network interfaces on our mobile devices, and use all the networks around us. Using multiple networks at a time makes makes possible faster connections, seamless connectivity and potentially lower usage charges. The goal of this paper is to explore how to make use of all the networks with today's technology. Specifically, we prototyped a solution on an Android phone. Usi… Show more

“…congestion of a popular RSU, mobile vehicle can switch to associate with other candidate RSUs in its communication range. The multi-gain idea to explore multinetworks has been recently advocated as part of the softwaredefined networking (SDN) technologies [4], e.g. OpenRadio project [12], [13].…”

“…WiFi routers, base stations, mesh nodes, sensors and others) that can support communications with infrastructure in vehicular networks. These RSUs provide better signals, spare spectrum and higher bandwidth to enable applications such as mobile data dissemination, Internet access services, and nearby information sharing [1], [2], [3], [4]. Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communication depends on the number and locations of RSUs being used opportunistically by end users [5], [6].…”

“…To solve this problem, some authors [4]- [10] use a multiuse interface connectivity, which can be supported at various layers in the network stack, such as TCP (MPTCP), sockets, and the HTTP layer, thereby enabling the mobile device to send and receive data through multiple network interfaces simultaneously. Some works modify the link layer [4] in a way that an application sends traffic by connecting to a virtual ethernet interface that stitches multiple interfaces together.…”
