“…In another Trachypithecus species, Gibson and Chu [1992] estimate 6.5-7.0 months (equivalent to 198-213 days) for captive Francois leaf monkeys. For captive Rhinopithecus species gestation lengths of 189-208 days were determined [Hama et al, 1997;He et al, 2001;Ji et al, 1998;Qi, 1986;Ren et al, 2003], for Douc langurs 210 days [Lippold, 1981], for wild Hanuman langurs 210 days [Borries et al, 2001] and for provisioned ones 200 days [Sommer et al, 1992]. In all these species females are about 21 kg heavier than in silvered leaf monkeys [Smith & Jungers, 1997] and as expected, gestation periods were slightly longer.…”

“…The study animals were one adult male and four adult female R. bieti housed at the Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ) [Ji et al, 1998], and one adult male and three adult females of the same species kept at the Kunming Zoo (KZ). All of the animals had been captured from a group in Wenxi County (27127 0 N, 99111 0 E) in northwest Yunnan.…”

“…The social systems of R. bieti at Wuyapaya are composed of several multi-female, one-male units, and an all-male unit [Kirkpatrick et al, 1998]. Although the evidence is circumstantial, Kirkpatrick et al [1998] concluded that the birth season of the Wuyapuya group of R. bieti starts in March and ends in April, with August and September being the height of the breeding season [Kirkpatrick et al, 1998], and with a gestation period of 6.5-7 months [Ji et al, 1998]. The ratio of infants to adult females (1.0:2.3) at the end of the birth season [Kirkpatrick et al, 1998] suggests that the interbirth interval (IBI) is approximately 2 yr.…”

“…Some studies have addressed the reproductive behavior in this genus [Qi, 1989;Clarke, 1991;Ren et al, 1995;Ji et al, 1998], but no work has been carried out on possible seasonality of matings and births. Meanwhile, reproductive seasonality is a very important aspect in the life history of animals, as they must be able to adjust to, and even anticipate, the changes taking place around them [Follett, 1984].…”
