Abstract: Some observations suggest that solar spicules show small amplitude and high frequency oscillations of magneto-acoustic waves, which arise from photospheric granular forcing. We apply the method of MHD seismology to determine the period of kink waves. For this purposes, the oscillations of a magnetic cylinder embedded in a field-free environment is investigated. Finally, diagnostic diagrams displaying the oscillatory period in terms of some equilibrium parameters are provided to allow a comparison between theoret… Show more

“…Hargreaves (2008); Hargreaves and Erdélyi (2009)) and lead to the observed oscillations (Kukhianidze et al (2006); Zaqarashvili et al (2007)). The recent theoretical paper by Ajabshirizadeh et al (2009) also shows that the kink waves with periods of ∼ 80-120 s may propagate in spicules at higher heights. Indeed, the oscillations of Doppler velocity in spicules with similar periods were reported by Zaqarashvili et al (2007).…”

“…The two type of waves responsible for periodic transverse displacement of spicule axis are: kink or Alfvén waves. If spicules are modelled as plasma jets being shot along magnetic flux tube, then the transverse oscillations could be caused by MHD kink waves (Kukhianidze et al (2006); Zaqarashvili et al (2007); Erdélyi and Fedun (2007); Ajabshirizadeh et al (2009)). If a spicule is not stable wave guide for the tube waves, then the oscillations can be caused by Alfvén waves (De Pontieu et al (2007a)).…”

“…Spicule seismology, which means the determination of spicule properties from observed oscillations and was originally suggested by Zaqarashvili et al (2007), has been significantly developed during last years (Ajabshirizadeh et al 2009;Verth et al 2011;Tavabi et al 2011).…”

“…These properties suggest they are confined by the chromospheric magnetic field, especially where the beta of the plasma becomes small. It makes it difficult to imagine transverse motion of spicules without implying transverse motions of the magnetic field also (Ajabshirizadeh et al 2009). In addition, the horizontal scale for amplitude coherence of P-modes ( ≈ 8000 km) is well beyond the width of fibrils (De Pontieu et al, 2003 and2004) and, evidently, off limb spicules.…”
