Magnetic resonance imaging of a brain abscess in a 10‐month‐old filly

Abstract: The purpose of this paper was to correlate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of a mature brain abscess in a horse with histopathologic alterations of brain tissue. Eight months after the onset of clinical signs, MRI of the brain of a 10-month-old filly was performed. A large space-occupying lesion in the right cerebral hemisphere was identified. This space-occupying lesion was delineated by a thick and well-defined capsule that was isointense to brain parenchyma on the T1-weighted images and… Show more

“…6 Magnetic resonance images for the case described in the present report were strongly suggestive of a diagnosis of brain abscess. 1,7 Typically, mature abscesses have an isointense to hypointense core on T1-weighted images and an isointense to hyperintense core with a hypointense capsule on T2-weighted images. Abscesses containing semisolid material tend to be isointense, 7 which was the case for the abscesses in this cria.…”

Formation of a capsule with accompanying neovascularization accounts for the ring enhancement of the lesion on T1-weighted images after administration of contrast medium.…”

“…MRI already has been proven successful in diagnosing brain masses in horses (Audigie et al 2004, Spoormakers et al 2003, Arencibia et al 2001, Westbrook and Kaut 1998 but there are no references to ependymomas in this species. Instead, Maulet et al (2008) described the MR appearance of cholesteatoma in the lateral ventricles of a horse.…”
