Macrocyclic metal complexes: synthesis and characterization of 14- and 16- membered tetraaza macrocyclic complexes of transition metals

Abstract: A new 14-membered macrocyclic ligand, 5,7,12,14-dibenzo-2,3,9,10-tetraoxa-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane and a 16-membered ligand, 6,8,14,16-dibenzo-4,12-dimethyl-2,10-diphenyl-1,5,9,13-tetraazacyclohexadeca-1,5,9,12-tetraene and their transition metal complexes were prepared by the template method and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, i.r., 1 H-n.m.r., electronic spectral studies, conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements.

“…A strong absorption band in the region ca. 1615-1655 cm )1 may be attributed to the C=N group [2,19]. The lower values of m(C=N) may be explained on the basis of drift of a lone pair density of azomethine nitrogen towards the metal atom [17,20].…”

“…Macrocycles have been studied extensively and are best prepared by the aid of metal ions as templates to direct the condensation reaction towards ring closure [2]. A number of nitrogen donor macrocyclic derivatives have long been used in analytical, industrial and medical applications [3].…”

“…This confirms the condensation of carbonyl groups of isatin and amino groups of ethylenediamine 13,14 . This fact is also supported by the appearance of a new strong absorption band in the region ∼1590-1615 cm −1 , which may be attributed to ν(C=N) 15,16 . These results provide strong evidence for the formation of the macrocyclic frame 17 .…”

“…The condensation of carbonyl groups and amino groups [12,13] and the assembly of macrocyclic Schiff's base [11] is further supported by presence of a new strong absorption band in the region 1615-1590 cm -1 . This may be attributed due to ν(C=N) [14,15].…”
