Lymphoproliferative responses toBorrelia burgdorferiin circumscribed scleroderma

Abstract: Humoral immune responses to Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) have been reported to occur in certain patients with circumscribed scleroderma (CS) (morphoea). Together with the isolation of spirochaetes from CS skin biopsies, this finding was taken to suggest Bb as the aetiological agent of CS. Since there is cellular immunoreactivity to Bb in patients with chronic Lyme borreliosis (LB), Bb-specific lymphocytic responses were tested in patients with CS. For this purpose, peripheral blood mononuclear cells from CS patie… Show more

“…20,21 Our patient had neither IgG nor IgM serum antibodies to Bb, but even chronic Lyme borreliosis may remain seronegative. 36 In addition, the negativity of PCR detection of Bb DNA in the urine can be explained, as a third of patients with LSA were shown to be negative in a previous study. 30 The exact causes of LSA are still not known, but various factors beyond the infectious ones are very probably involved.…”

“…All patients showed IgG antibodies to B. burgdorferi by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. 13 In four of 11 patients, B. afzelii, sensu lato a genospecies of B. burgdorferi, common in Europe and mostly detected in ACA skin 14 was isolated from a skin biopsy.…”

“…20 Elevated lymphoproliferative responses to B. burgdorferi have been reported in some patients with morphoea. 21,22 Attempts to identify B. burgdorferi DNA using PCR have led to variable results. The ®rst report using nested PCR on skin biopsies with a primer set speci®c for the¯agellin gene of B. burgdorferi gave outstanding results with B. burgdorferi being demonstrated in all six patients with lichen sclerosus, all nine with morphoea, both patients with erythema chronicum migrans and the one patient with acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans examined.…”
