Lyapunov Stability and Performance Analysis of the Fractional Order Sliding Mode Control for a Parallel Connected UPS System under Unbalanced and Nonlinear Load Conditions

Abstract: Parallel-connected uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems have been used to maintain power supply to the critical load in order to increase power capacity and system reliability. This paper presents a robust and precise voltage control strategy for parallel-connected UPS systems. Each parallel-connected UPS system consists of a three-phase inverter with an output inductor-capacitor (LC) filter directly connected to an AC common bus in order to feed the critical load. Fractional-order sliding mode control (… Show more

“…Single-phase pulse width modulation (PWM)-based unipolar inverters are an integral component for the realization of such systems. However, the nonlinear loads affect the sinusoidal output voltage of inverters, as they increase the total harmonic distortion (THD), resulting in the difficulty of meeting IEEE standard 1547 [1][2][3][4]. In order to regulate the output voltage in the presence of uncertain load conditions, a robust controller with good transient and dynamic response is required [5].…”

“…An offline portable generator operates in two modes of operation, inverter mode. Since the inverter usually is off while the load is powered directly from the input grid, and the other is the backup mode, the UPS will switch to inverter operation and draw energy from the battery [10]. Figure 1 illustrates the topology of portable generator passive stand-by/offline.…”

“…Hysteresis control is a type of non-linear controller, it takes the error to zero within a few-cycle and has variable switching frequency, which produces severe stress on VSI switches. This stress decreases the life of the inverter [7,8].…”
