Lung Cancer and Prognosis in Taiwan: A Population-Based Cancer Registry

Abstract: In additional to tumor-nodes-metastasis (TNM) staging system, patient sex and age, tumor location, cell type, and differentiation were independent prognostic factors. We recommend incorporation of these factors to subclassify lung cancer patients.

“…[21][22][23][24] A large population-based Taiwan cancer registry demonstrated that women with lung cancer had a better median and 5-year survival. 25 Lungscape is the first large series reporting on lung cancer surgical outcome measured not only by OS but also by RFS and TTR and presenting multivariate analysis including most of the significant clinical and pathological prognostic parameters reported to date. As tissue from all patients has been preserved locally and is available for detailed molecular investigations, Lungscape provides an excellent basis to evaluate the influence of molecular parameters on the disease outcome after radical resection, in addition to providing an overview of the molecular landscape of stage I to III NSCLC.…”

“…In 2012, lung cancer was responsible for 1.6 million deaths, amounting to about 20% of all cancer‐related deaths (International Agency for Research on Cancer, 2014). The 5‐year survival rates for lung cancer in 2005–2009 ranged from 15% to 20% in most countries (Cheng et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2013). Non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common histological type, comprising approximately 80%–85% of cases (Herbst, Heymach, & Lippman, 2008; Reck, Heigener, Mok, Soria, & Rabe, 2013).…”

“…17 Patients with shorter survival were always with worse differentiated pathogenesis. So, it's essential to investigate the biological indication of MAC30 on tumor differentiation, which affects clinical therapies and survival of patients with NSCLC.…”
