Abstract: A checklist of records of aspidogastrean trematodes (Aspidogastrea) is provided on the basis of a comprehensive survey of the literature since 1826, when the first aspidogastrean species was reported, until December 2014. We list 61 species representing 13 genera within 4 families and 2 orders of aspidogastreans associated with 298 species of invertebrate and vertebrate hosts. The majority of records include bivalves (44% of the total number of host-parasite associations), whereas records from bony fishes repr… Show more

“…Out of 12 species of the genus Aspidogaster , 4 species, i.e., A. conchicola, A. decatis, A. ijimai , and A. limacoides , have C. carpio as their final host as far as the literature are concerned [ 1 ]. Our aspidogastrean worms were strongly expected to be one of the 4 species above mentioned.…”

“…Subclass of Aspidogastrea is the most basal group of trematodes comprising of about 61 valid species distributed worldwide [ 1 ]. The aspidogastrid flukes live in cold-blooded animals, like crustaceans, molluscs, fish, and reptiles, as the facultative or obligatory parasites in marine and freshwater environments [ 2 ].…”

“…This parasite has been recorded in South Africa (Bray, 1984) and Venezuela (Chinchilla et al, 2000), but prior to the present study, there were no reports of any Cotylogaster from Brazil (Kohn et al, 2007;Alves et al, 2015).…”

“…A recent study recorded the occurrence of 61 species of aspidobothreans in invertebrate and vertebrate hosts around the world (Alves et al, 2015). In 70.5% of these cases, the parasite infects freshwater hosts, and the other 29.5%, marine hosts.…”

“…Aspidogastreans (Animalia, Platyhelminthes, Neodermata, Trematoda) Aspidogastreans form a basal group of trematodes (flukes), sister to the Digenea (Rohde et al 2001). Of the 61 aspidogastrean species known today, only 18 infect marine hosts (Alves et al 2015 Alves et al 2015). Of these, only a single species, M. cristata, was reported from South Africa from the gall bladder and spiral valve of Sphyrna lewini (Griffith et Smith) and the abdominal cavity of Carcharias taurus Rafinesque Tkachuk 1980, Bray 1984).…”
