Taxonomy of Geastrum species in the neotropics has been subject to divergent opinions among specialists. In our study, type collections were reassessed and compared with recent collections in order to delimit species in Geastrum, sect. Myceliostroma, subsect. Epigaea. A thorough review of morphologic features combined with barcode and phylogenetic analyses (ITS and LSU nrDNA) revealed six new species (G. neoamericanum, G. rubellum, G. brunneocapillatum, G. baculicrystallum, G. rubropusillum and G. courtecuissei). In additon, the presence of hairs on the exoperidium, a commonly used feature to diagnose Geastrum species, proved to be ineffective because it is a derived character within subsect. Epigaea.

Based on the available literature, a list of 40 gasteroid species recorded in Paraguay since the earliest known collection is presented. A total of forty species are reported, distributed among 16 genera and 4 families. This work represents the first compilation of data available on this group of fungi for Paraguay. These numbers reveal the scarce amount of species formally cited for the Paraguayan Funga.

Estrellas de tierra" Geastrum (Geastraceae, Basidiomycota): nuevas citas para el Pantanal paraguayo. Se citan por primera vez para el Paraguay 3 especies de Geastrum, G. argentinum, G. hariotii y G. pampeanum var. pallidum,; y por primera vez para la región noreste del país y ecorregión del Pantanal: G. saccatum y G. triplex. Se describen las características morfológicas macroscópicas y microscópicas distintivas de cada especie, son presentadas fotografías de los basidiomas en fresco y se hacen comentarios con respecto a su distribución, ecologia y taxonomía. Palabras clave: Geastrales, micobiota Neotropical, taxonomía de hongos Geastrum species (Geastraceae, Basidiomycota): new records from the Paraguayan Pantanal. Geastrum argentinum, G. hariotii and G. pampeanum var. pallidum are recorded for the first time from the Paraguayan chaco and G. saccatum and G. triplex are recorded for the first time for the Northeastern region of the country and the Pantanal ecoregion. The distinctive macroscopic and microscopic morphological characteristics of each species are herein described, and photographs of fresh basidiomata are presented along with comments regarding their distribution and taxonomy.
