Spinaxinus (Bivalvia: Thyasiroidea) from sulfide biogenerators in the Gulf of Mexico and hydrothermal vents in the Fiji Back Arc: chemosymbiosis and taxonomy

Abstract: SUMMARY: Two new species of the thyasirid genus Spinaxinus (S. emicatus Oliver n. sp. and S. phrixicus Oliver n. sp.) are described from the Gulf of Mexico and the southwest Pacific, respectively. Both are compared with the type species of the genus, the eastern Atlantic S. sentosus . Living specimens from the Gulf of Mexico were retrieved from artificial sulfide bio-generators on the upper Louisiana Slope. Gill morphology and molecular markers from the symbiotic bacteria confirm that Spinaxinus is chemosynthe… Show more

“…histriaensis is not unusual in Recent thyasirids. Soft periostracal spines are a defining feature of Spinaxinus Oliver & Holmes, 2006, comprising four known species (Oliver et al 2013;Oliver & Rodriguez 2017). According to Oliver (2015), shell pustules are diagnostic for Parathyasira (e.g.…”

“…The family Thyasiridae contains about 130 species (WoRMS Editorial Board, 2020) that are very widespread in the world's oceans. Thyasirids were found in the northern and southern hemispheres, from the poles to the equator and from the intertidal to the maximum depths of the oceans (Filatova, 1961(Filatova, , 1968Bernard, 1979;Scarlato, 1981;Belyaev, 1989;Payne & Allen, 1991;Coan, Scott & Bernard, 2000;Okutani, 2000;Oliver & Killeen, 2002;Allen, 2008Allen, , 2015Zelaya, 2009Zelaya, , 2010Coan & Valentich-Scott, 2012;Oliver et al, 2013, Oliver, 2015, Oliver & Rodrigues, 2017. “…The current discussed species is the first record of Spinaxinus in whale bone falls trap. Usually, the species related to organic falls are retrieved at surrounding sediments and, supporting the period, only 10 months of bones decomposition, that new species are considered as early colonizer (Oliver et al, 2013).…”
