Abstract: ABSTRACT. The peels of avocados, like other fruit peels, are commonly discarded, not knowing their potential use. In order to reuse avocado peel, the chemical and mineral compositions, total phenolic and flavonoid contents as well as antioxidant activities have been investigated by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and FRAP(ferric-reducing antioxidant power) methods in in natura and dehydrated avocado peel. Dehydrated avocado-peel tea was manufactured and the antioxidant activity was evaluated, as well as t… Show more

“…Dried avocado peels were used for a new beverage formulation, very promising in the market; the functional beverage showed a significant mineral content, a stable composition over time in total polyphenols and flavonoids and a 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) antiradical activity similar to that registered for mate tea (Rotta et al ., ).…”

“…Peel generally has about threefold higher polyphenols content than seed and pulp, and showed higher antioxidant capacity when tested by different assays (β‐carotene bleaching inhibition, reducing power, radical scavenging activity; Rodríguez‐Carpena et al ., ; Kosińska et al ., ; Rotta et al ., ; Melgar et al ., ; Tremocoldi et al ., ). Additionally, peel extracts from Hass and Fuerte varieties inhibited the release of the inflammation mediator nitric oxide, and of the pro‐inflammatory cytokines TNF‐α, suggesting a possible role of this by‐product in the reduction of free radicals action during inflammation (Tremocoldi et al ., ).…”

“…The participants in the sensory analysis received the tea samples in glass cups and they were asked to rate the samples in terms of color, taste, odor, appearance and overall acceptance. The judges used the hedonic scale, anchored at the ends with 'like extremely' (7) to 'dislike extremely' (1) as the acceptance test (Rotta et al 2016). The analysis were carried out with two replications.…”

“…Avocado seeds are also reported to have high antioxidant activity [16]. Furthermore, avocado peels which regarded as waste are reported to have antioxidant and antidiabetic activity [17,18]. Methanol extract of avocado peel has been reported to have antioxidant activity of 9467 µg/mL [19] and α-amylase inhibition activity of 36.02 µg/mL [20].…”
