Low-Impedance, High Surface Area Pt-Ir Electrodeposited on Cochlear Implant Electrodes

Abstract: A high surface area, Pt-Ir coating was electrodeposited onto the contacts of Advanced Bionics HiFocus 1j electrode arrays. The coating was imaged using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the impedance was directly measured using clinically relevant voltage transients of biphasic pulses as short as 17 μs. The coating, which SEM showed to completely cover the underlying substrate, decreased the polarization impedance of 17 μs and 32 μs pulses by 91% and 93%, respectively.

“…Functional electrostimulation (FES) is a technique used to treat dorsal spine injuries, sensorial problems, as well as neurological problems. Applications of functional electrostimulation include restoration of hand function for individuals with cervical level spinal cord injury (SCI) [5], restoration of vision to the blind by using an array of electrodes attached to the retina [6,7], treatment of hearing problems [8,9], and deep brain stimulation for neural problems including Parkinson’s disease [10], involuntary movements, and psychiatric diseases such as depression and obsessive compulsive disorder [11,12].…”

“…Electrodeposited platinum-iridium coating has demonstrated its ability to record single units through microelectrodes ( Cassar et al, 2019 ), as well as deliver charge through relatively large cochlear electrodes both in vitro ( Lee et al, 2018 ; Dalrymple et al, 2019 ) and in vivo ( Dalrymple et al, 2020 ). Darymple et al ( Dalrymple et al, 2019 ) compared EPIC electrode to PEDOT and Graphene Oxide in an accelerated aging electrochemistry experiment in saline.…”
