Low Complexity Digital Perturbation Back-propagation

Abstract: A novel back-propagation algorithm is proposed based on perturbation analysis to compensate the intra-channel nonlinearity. It reduces 85% back-propagation stages in an experiment of dual polarization QPSK transmission over 1500 km dispersion uncompensated link.

“…Hence, DBP is often used to benchmark schemes proposed in the literature [4]- [16]. The assumed optimality of DBP has spurred intense research in low-complexity variations, including iterative symmetric SSFM [3], [7], noniterative asymmetric SSFM [2], weighted DBP [4], perturbation DBP [5], [8], and filtered DBP [9], [16]. The robustness of DBP has also been studied extensively for various scenarios in [10]- [15].…”

“…In Fig. 7(a) and (b), LDBP SCM with XPolM compensation is also plotted, which is denoted as LDBP XPolM SCM [22]. Compared with LDBP XPolM SCM, ADBP has a better performance at the large step size because of the reduced CD impact.…”

“…As for the nonlinear section, compared to LDBP, it requires an additional complexity for the cross polarization term calculation. Furthermore, since the coupling factor between the two polarizations is different [22], nonlinear phase correction terms at the two polarizations are different, requiring extra complexities. As a result, we show the complex multiplications per sample as a function of the step size in Fig.…”

“…BERs were averaged out of 10 data sets with different polarization combinations in back-to-back and after 5-, 10-, and 15-span transmission and ASE loading. In each SC BERs were measured by off-line based digital coherent receiver after PBP algorithms [7].…”

“…In this paper, to enhance the reachability further, we propose to combine the SPP and nonlinear compensation (NLC) technologies with DSP, such as perturbation back-propagation (PBP) [7]. This proposed method helps mitigating not only optical NLXT but also intra-SC nonlinearity (NL).…”
