Long term stability of a long intra-cavity saturable absorber external cavity semiconductor laser

Abstract: A single-mode, ultra-stable, free-running laser based on an external cavity laser with a saturable absorber is presented. We report for the first time the use of external cavity of fully erbium-doped fiber, where the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and the hyperbolic lens are directly formed on the doped fiber. Thus, the best scenario for dynamic grating performance, initiated via the inband-pumping along the entire cavity can be reached and the high stability of this laser is reported.

“…However, the output power was not specified and the single-frequency regime was also found to deteriorate depending on the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) drive current or, equivalently, on the intra-cavity power. The best long-term stability of single-frequency operation with a high SMSR of an erbium doped FECL was measured to be primarily within ± 1.5 pm ( ± 193 MHz) [16].…”
