Long-Term Functional Outcomes After Operative Treatment for Intra-Articular Fractures of the Calcaneus

Abstract: The long-term outcomes of operative treatment described in the present report are comparable with the long-term outcomes previously reported among smaller patient cohorts. Additional investigation is required to determine why patients with fractures that resulted from a motor-vehicle accident reported worse outcomes than patients with fractures that resulted from a fall.

“…These fractures are very important in socioeconomic terms as well, as they deprive 20% of the patients from returning to their jobs completely for up to three to five years following injury. [1][2][3] Calcaneus fractures comprise 2% of all the fractures, and they are the most common fractures among the tarsal bone fractures. Intraarticular calcaneus fractures comprise 75% of all the calcaneus fractures.…”

“…This is a difficult task that is achieved only in some cases, even in trained hands, as can be inferred from the literature [20]. Approximately 80% of cases obtain the required perfect reduction in series with numerous cases treated by experienced surgeons.…”
