“…Masaki, Endo & Ebashi (I 967) showed with fluorescin isothiocyanate-labelled antibody against a-actinin of chicken skeletal muscle that the 6 S component was located in the 2 line. This result was also obtained by Schollmeyer et al (1973), who further found with two smooth muscles (from chicken gizzard and pig uterus) that the location was in the dense bodies; they suggest that the dense amorphous material there consists at least in part of a-actinin.…”

“…Thus far, only four proteins have been described which bind to actin: myosin, tropomyosin, troponin, and ot-actinin, a-Actinin has a molecular weight of about 95,000 (Schollmeyer et al, 1973) and thus might correspond to the 95,000 mol wt protein in the false discharge. It is interesting that ~x-actinin is a major component of the "Z" line in skeletal muscle and is found in the dense bodies of smooth muscle (Schollmeyer et al, 1973). Its function in muscle seems to be to hold the actin filaments together.…”

“…The dense bodies have been considered to be attachment sites of thin filaments analogous to the Z lines of straited muscles (Ashton et al 1975, Schollmayer et al 1973, Somlyo et al . 1971).…”
