Local Antibiotic Delivery with Bovine Cancellous Chips

Abstract: Infected bone defects and osteomyelitis are encountered frequently in trauma cases. Currently, the standard of care for osteomyelitis cases is prolonged systemic antibiotic therapy and implantation of antibiotic carrier beads. However, this method requires a secondary surgery to remove the beads after the infection has cleared. In the present study a common bone void filler was investigated for its ability to be infused with an antibiotic. This study demonstrates that the xenograft material tested can be loade… Show more

“…[40] Figure 3(c) shows a simple circuit with sufficient fitting results, which is used very often. [4,12,26,29,32,36,[42][43][44][45][46][47][48] As a rule this equivalent circuit is used for a metal in contact with an electrolyte and it consists of the resistance of the solution R sol , a capacitance and the resistance R 1 , which can be a CTR [4,12,32] or the resistance of the passive layer. [32] The CTR represents the limited charge transfer through the interface and the electric double-layer capacitance.…”

“…[29] Lewis models the equivalent circuit with the capacitance of the surface oxide film of Ti6Al4V and R 1 being the sum of the CTR and the pore resistance with a possible electrolyte penetration into the pores of the surface. [43] A CPE is used instead of the capacitance in Figure 3(c) owing to an inhomogeneous coverage of a CoCrMb alloy and of different titanium alloy surfaces in contact with serum proteins and oxides. The CPE includes film and double layer capacitance in series.…”

“…To prevent and treat bacterial infections and related infectious diseases, antibiotics can be administered systemically and locally on the surface of bone grafts [1,3,5]. It is highly important that the ingrowth and ossification process is not inhibited by the presence of such antibiotics.…”

“…Reconstruction of skeletal defects after trauma or disease [1][2][3], as well as repairing damage caused during surgery, has been a challenging problem in orthopaedics. The use of bone grafts quickly became a standard solution, since bone serves as a biologically active filling material and grows perfectly into spaces where a lack of material provides such a niche.…”

“…The release rate begins to plateau and all three concentrations begin eluting statistically similar quantities from day five out to day fourteen (P [ 0.10). The quantity of gentamicin eluting from each graft remained above the minimum effective concentration of 1.56 lg/mL for at least 13 days (Lewis et al 2010). …”
