Predatory mites of the family Phytoseiidae are important biological control agents of phytophagous arthropods including mites. A survey on phytoseiid mites associated with different crops was carried out in many localities in Cyprus during 2009 and 2010. Five species are recorded for the first time from various plants in Cyprus: Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor), N. cucumeris (Oudemans), Iphiseius degenerans (Berlese), Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot and Phytoseius plumifer (Canestrini & Fanzago). In all cases, these phytoseiid mite species were found in great abundance.

Amblyseius tsugawai is a phytoseiid species distributed in Asia. In the present study, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate its preference to prey stages when feeding on Tetranychus urticae and Bemisia tabaci, to evaluate its development and reproduction, and to estimate its life table parameters on each of the two prey species. Our results indicate that A. tsugawai shows preference to larvae of T. urticae, and to eggs of B. tabaci. When the two preferred stages were provided together, A. tsugawai randomly selected its prey. No significant difference in developmental times of A. tsugawai was observed when reared on T. urticae (6.75 days) and B. tabaci (7.05 days). In contrast, cumulative fecundity of A. tsugawai was only 14.6% when reared on B. tabaci (4.6 eggs/female) than on T. urticae (31.5 eggs/female). Impact of prey for both females and males on reproduction were also observed. Comparing to the treatment when both parents were reared on T. urticae, A. tsugawai fecundity was reduced by ca. 48.2% when the male was reared on B. tabaci, and was reduced by 86.5% and 88.8% when the female or both parents were reared on B. tabaci, respectively. Amblyseius tsugawai is the first indigenous phytoseiid species of China to show a positive intrinsic rate of population increase (0.013) when reared on B. tabaci as the only prey. The potential of A. tsugawai in greenhouse whitefly control is discussed.

We investigated the overwintering sites of the predacious mite Neoseiulus californicus in two satsuma mandarin orchards on Jeju Island, Korea, in February 2008. Our objectives were to improve the biological control strategy with N. californicus in perennial crops and to develop effective methods for examining the overwintering situations of N. californicus in the field. Nearly all specimens of N. californicus collected in the orchards were adult females, and the numbers of adult males and juveniles were very low. Most N. californicus were collected on herbaceous plants on the ground rather than on satsuma mandarin trees or woody plants surrounding the orchards. Among herbaceous plant species, higher densities of N. californicus were consistently found on species with rosette-type leaves compared to those with non-rosette-type leaves. Our results suggest that rosette-forming herbaceous plants are effective overwintering sites for conserving N. californicus in orchards. Furthermore, these plants would also provide useful sites for examining the potential overwintering situations of N. californicus in the field.

Abstract: This study provides a list of and key to the 29 species of the subfamily Amblyseiinae in Korea. The subfamily comprises seven genera: Amblyseiulella Muma, Amblyseius Berlese, Euseius Wainstein, Neoseiulus Hughes, Okiseius Ehara, Proprioseiopsis Muma and Typhlodromips De Leon.
