Lipomatous hamartoma of mitral valve

Abstract: Primary cardiac tumors are very rare, and tumors arising from cardiac valves are extremely rare. We present a case of lipomatous hamartoma of the mitral valve in a young female. This is the 6th case of lipomatous hamartoma of the mitral valve to be reported. We discuss the operative and histopathological findings.

“…15 Other rare hamartomatous tumors in the heart contain areas of mature fat as a component of the lesion. These include hamartoma of cardiac valves, 16 which have a mixture of fat and fibrous tissue, and rare intramuscular cardiac tumors with fat, vessels, heart muscle cells, and nerves. 17 Because this so-called mesenchymal hamartoma has been reported only once and overlaps significantly with intramuscular hemangiomas (except for the nerve tissue), it is not considered a separate entity in the WHO classification of heart tumors.…”

“…To date, 6 cases of lipomatous hamartoma on the mitral valve, 4 on the tricuspid valve, and 1 on the aortic valve have been reported worldwide. 3 The lipomatous hamartomas described in previous reports were multilobulated, yellowish, glistening lesions that had broad-based attachment to the valve leaflet. Our case is the first to be found growing rapidly in the LV outflow tract.…”
