Abstract: A B s m A c T : A plasma membrane fraction derived from rat brain nerve endings or the synaptic plasma membrane fraction, isolated by zonal centrifugation, was analyzed for their lipid content and their composition of lipid classes and their aliphatic moieties. With the exception of glycolipids and sphingomyelin, the lipid classes of synaptic plasma membrane are very similar to whole brain. “…With few exceptions, this compound seldom represents more than 10% of the fatty acids of any phosphatide, except in the nervous system where it is concentrated in the phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine fraction of grey matter ; it is not an important component of myelin [SO] but represents about 13 % of the fatty acids in the phospholipid fraction from squid retinal axon plasma membrane [51].
