“…This is supported by studies (Mutasim et al, 1988) showing that when skin in organ cultures is exposed to bullous pemphigoid serum, bullous pemphigoid antibodies bind within the lamina lucida in most specimens and only occasionally within the cell, in contrast to indirect immunoelectron microscopic staining, which shows binding both intracellularly and in the lamina lucida. Similar results were found in biopsies from lesional skin of patients with bullous pemphigoid where immunoglobulins were deposited extracellularly (Chan et al, 1995).
