Line × Tester Analysis for Morphological and Fruit Biochemical Traits in Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) Using Wild Relatives as Testers

Abstract: Wild relatives of eggplant are commonly exploited for eggplant improvement, but the genetic improvement relies on the information of the genetic basis of inheritance of traits. In this study, two eggplant lines, one with oriental and another with occidental cytoplasm, were crossed with four testers representing three wild species, namely, Solanum insanum, S.anguivi, and S. lichtensteinii. The Line × Tester cross produced a total of eight interspecific hybrids. Parents and their hybrids were evaluated for 3 bio… Show more

“…Furthermore, a correlation between F1 mean and SCA r(F1, SCA) also exhibited significant correlation for only lysine content. These results were in agreement with [35][36][37] that emphasized the higher efficiency of SCAs for predicting the grain yield of QPM maize hybrids. Heritability(bs) all traits exhibited more than 90% heritability except shelling percentage.…”

“…Likewise, from the last few years, farmer's interest and preference towards hybrids of eggplant have increased dramatically. Moreover, to overcome yield targets and to fulfil the demand, the researchers are focusing on delivering high yielding eggplant hybrids [4,5]. Heterosis is a phenomenon in which a progeny of distinct individuals exhibitshigher/lower values for the traits than the average of any of the original parent used for the development of the hybrid [6].…”

“…Moreover, the genetics of chilli pepper are not well studied as compared to other members of Solanaceae [15][16][17]. Therefore, many concentrated efforts are necessary to develop improved quality hybrids with high yield.…”
