Limestone and Calcined Clay-Based Sustainable Cementitious Materials for 3D Concrete Printing: A Fundamental Study of Extrudability and Early-Age Strength Development

Abstract: The goal of this study is to investigate the effects of different grades of calcined clay on the extrudability and early-age strength development under ambient conditions. Four mix designs were proposed. Three of them contained high, medium, and low grades of calcined clay, respectively, and one was the reference without calcined clay. In terms of extrudability, an extrusion test method based on the ram extruder was introduced to observe the quality of extruded material filaments, and to determine the extrusio… Show more

“…The reason for this lies in a smaller surface grain size of limestone powder, resulting in a better compaction of the matrix. Similar results were found in other studies [17,29,38,[84][85][86][87]. In theory, a higher amount of binder should translate to higher rigidity and strength of the mix, which was not observed in most of the studied mixes.…”

“…The suitability of LC 3 as a material for 3D printing process has been investigated by Chen et al [ 183 ]. They prepared four mixtures containing different proportions of two calcined clay with lower (49%) and higher (90%) metakaolinite content, and then conducted extrudability and earlier strength tests on them.…”
