George Bond was born at Shirebrook, Derbyshire. His father William Arthur Bond, who was a colliery engineer, was brought up in Eckington, Derbyshire, and Killamarsh, Yorkshire. Showing great promise at school he was kept on for a year as a pupil-teacher. But this did not suit him and he left to train as a blacksmith and then a colliery winder. George Bond’s mother, Minnie, née Brown, came from Dordon near Tamworth. This firm Midland background may surprise some of his friends, who lacking a keen ear for regional speech may have regarded George Bond as an archetypical Scot, rather dour but kindly, careful but not mean. Throughout his long Glaswegian career he stoutly maintained his Englishness, shown by his love of gardening and home pursuits, the countryside, cricket and cycling. In fine weather he cycled to work in shorts, hardly the attire of a Scotsman!
