Summary Lifetime management of circuit breakers (CBs) compared with the other components in power system is dependent not only on the natural age but also on the number of operation, applications, and maintenance scheduling. In addition, condition‐monitoring systems (CMSs) are widely used to extend lifetime and improve the quality of maintenance. However, the employing CMSs for CBs are faced with economical and technical challenges. This paper presents a new probabilistic aging failure model for CBs equipped with CMS. The proposed model improves the conventional approach for the assessment of efficiency of maintenance strategies using available filed data and coupling some weighting factors. The model is based on the state diagram along with Monte Carlo simulations to provide more flexibility in quantification of practical concerns. The model helps us to compare all maintenance strategies within 1 framework to select the best policy with respect to working situation of CBs. The approach has been compared and verified with the conventional aging model. Moreover, it is numerically applied to 2 common types of CBs, that is, SF6 and minimum oil based on the field data to reveal the results of considering the real aging and dynamic behavior of CBs on cost/benefits of maintenance policies. The results of applying the proposed approach to CBs indicate that ignoring the realistic situation of CBs results in a significant underestimation or overestimation of reliability and consequently making a wrong decision on installation of CMS or even in selection of the optimum inspection time.

The vibration signals generated by the transmission and impact of circuit breaker mechanical components have chaotic characteristics and using conventional signal processing method is difficult to distinguish the abnormal operation process quickly and accurately. Based on the mutual information method and the Cao algorithm, the delay time and the embedding dimension of the phase space reconstruction parameters are calculated and optimized according to the chaotic characteristics of the vibration signals. The singular value order energy (SVOE) and the singular value energy entropy (SVEE) are obtained by decomposing the phase space reconstruction matrix, which is determined by the optimal phase space reconstruction parameters, and the support vector machines (SVM) are used to identify the states of the circuit breaker in operation. The experimental results show that the combination phase space reconstruction and singular value decomposition (PSR-SVD) can accurately extract the characteristics of the vibration signal of the circuit breaker, and the genetic algorithm (GA)-improved SVM can quickly and effectively identify the circuit breaker defect types, which solves the problems of path distortions, energy leaks, modal aliasing, and lack of samples in existing diagnostic methods.

Jams in the tripping devices are common faults in circuit breakers, which will lead to the failures in circuit breaker. The resist force of the coil plunger in the tripping device could effectively reveal the jam faults. In this paper, a recognition method for the coil plunger motion resist force based on coil current is proposed. The electromagnetic motion model of the coil is established, and the plunger resist force in VS1‐12 is recognized. According to the recognition result and the moving process of the coil plunger, the fitting formula of the resist force is proposed. The resist force from the coil is 5 N, while the force from the latch is 52 N. Based on the fitting formula, the trip coil current of the circuit breaker is simulated. The result is in good agreement with the test result, which verifies the validity of the fitting formula and the recognition method. The method can be applied to the circuit breaker with spring operating mechanism and effectively extract the resist force from the coil current. This research can provide reference for the condition detection and fault warning of coils in circuit breaker. © 2022 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Published by Wiley Periodicals LLC.
