Life expectancy and endogenous growth

Abstract: We consider an overlapping generations model with uncertain lifetime and endogenous growth. Individuals have t o c hoose the length of time devoted to schooling before starting to work. We show that it depends positively on life expectancy but that the positive e ect of a longer life on growth could beo set by a decrease in the participation rate. Dynamics are characterized by a delay di erential equation and human capital converges with oscillations to a balanced growth path.

“…Our findings may also be compared with the theoretical literature on why lower mortality contributes to economic growth (Ehrlich and Lui, 1991;De La Croix and Licandro, 1999;Kalemli-Ozcan, Ryder et al, 2000;Blackburn and Cipriani, 2002;Boucekkine, De La Croix et al, 2002;Kalemli-Ozcan, 2002;Bloom, Canning et al, 2003;Kalemli-Ozcan, 2003;Lagerlof, 2003). Two mechanisms have been explored.…”

“…Theoretical work dealing with the ageing-education nexus by Boucekkine et al (2002), de la Croix and Licandro (1999), Echevarria and Iza (2006) and Heijdra and Romp (2008) use variations of a Blanchard (1985) type of perpetual youth setup. By employing this model family the authors obtain closed form solutions and derive a number of insights by relying entirely on analytical results.…”
