An individual non-motile (NM) cell was isolated from a surface sediment sample collected in Guangxi, China and subsequently established as a dinoflagellate strain in culture. The motile cells are 22.5Á32.5 mm long and 20.0Á30.0 mm wide, with a plate formula of Po, X, 4?, 3a, 7ƒ, 6c, 5(?)s, 5ƒ?, 2ƒƒ, fitting the description of Vulcanodinium rugosum. The Chinese strain shares 99.8%, 97.4% and 96.7% similarity (LSU sequence) with those from Australasia, France and Japan. Asexual division of V. rugosum takes place either in the thecate motile stage or within a NM division cell. Motile cells divided by binary fission inside the parent cell and transformed to NM division cells within 24 h. The NM cell underwent one to three consecutive divisions within the parent wall. The divisions were not always synchronous and neither was the release of motile cells from the NM cells. It generally took 4 to 6 days for the NM cells to complete one division. NM cells survived for 1 month at 4 8C in the dark, suggesting that they might play an important role in species dispersal. A novel pinnatoxin was detected at 20 pg cell(1 and no other known pinnatoxins (AÁG) were detected.

Abstract. Parasitic dinoflagellates have recently emerged as significant disease agents of commercially important crustaceans. For example, epizootics of Hematodinium have seriously affected certain crab and lobster fisheries. The parasitic dinoflagellates of crustaceans are, however, relatively unknown. Marine crustaceans are parasitized by two orders of dinoflagellates: the Blastodinida and the Syndinida. Crustaceans are also parasitized by the Paradinida and the Ellobiopsidae, taxa that have close historical ties and possible taxonomic affinities with the dinoflagellates. The taxonomy and life history patterns of the different parasitic species are largely dictated by their host-parasite relationships. For example, sporulation in the blastodinids occurs internally but is completed externally with the expulsion of spores via the anus of the host. The egg-parasitic chytriodinids sporulate externally after destroying their host egg. The tissue-dwelling syndinids have plasmodia that sporulate internally and generally kill their hosts upon the expulsion of the dinospores. Unfortunately, complete life cycles have not been elucidated for any of the parasitic forms, hence characteristics of the life cycles must be applied cautiously to the systematics of the taxa. For example, gamogony and the presence of resting cysts are only known from a few species; they probably occur in most species. Further work on the life cycles of the parasitic dinoflagellates of crustaceans should concentrate on establishing the life cycles of representative species from each order or family. Parasitic dinoflagellates infect copepods, amphipods, mysids, euphausiids, and decapods. Their pathogenicity varies with their invasiveness in the host. The gut-dwelling blastodinids are relatively benign, while the chytriodinids kill their host egg. Members of the pervasive Syndinida and Paradinida are overtly pathogenic and insidiously ramify throughout the hemal sinuses and organs of their hosts. Members of the Ellobiopsidae vary from the commensal Ellobiocystis to the overtly parasitic Thulassomyces. Host castration and feminization are common pathologic results of infection by these parasites. The severity of the castration is dependent upon the invasiveness of the parasitic species and the duration of the infection, while the degree of feminization is related to the stage at which the host acquires the infection. Most of the parasitic dinoflagellates occur in epizootics in their host populations. Recent epizootics of Hematodinium spp. have had severe effects on crustacean fisheries in Alaska, Virginia, and Scotland, and may potentially result in changes to the benthic communities of the hosts. The epizootics are often associated with host-parasite systems that occur in regions with unique hydrological features, such as fjords or poorly draining estuaries with shallow sills. An annotated checklist of about 605 principally free-living dinoflagellate species and infraspecific taxa from 91 genera reported from the Mexican Pacific is presented on the basis of published literature, some theses, unpublished reports, and original data. Literature references from 1878 to 2005 (in total, 311) are included in the bibliography, and taxonomic notes in regard to some taxa are given, where appropriate. The presence of illustrations divided into three categories (line drawings, light micrographs and scanning electronic micrographs) in the cited works is indicated as well as the known distribution of the taxa in the Mexican Pacific. The nomenclature is brought up to date, and 193 species and infraspecific taxa are accompanied with original comments. Four new combinations are proposed: Histioneis pieltainii (B. F. Osorio) Okolodkov comb. nov., Latifascia subantarctica (Balech) Okolodkov comb. nov., Peridiniella globosa (P. A. Dang.) Okolodkov comb. nov. and Protoperidinium curtipes (Jörg.) Balech f. asymmetricum (Matzen.) Okolodkov comb. nov. Twentynine nomina nuda were revealed. The leading genera are Protoperidinium (111 species), Ceratium (63) Dinophysis (41), Gonyaulax (25), Oxytoxum (22), Gymnodinium (22), Prorocentrum (21), Alexandrium (17) Ornithocercus (12) and Amphidinium (12). To discover the true dinoflagellate species diversity in the Mexican Pacific, more studies on the athecate Gymnodiniales species, benthic and epiphytic dinoflagellates, the ''Diplopsalis group'', the genus Protoperidinium and recently described genera of the family Podolampadaceae, are needed.
