Life cycles, phylogeny and taxonomy ofDissodinium andPyrocystis (Dinophyta)

Abstract: Life cycles of several species belonging to the marine genera Dissodinium Klebs in Pascher and Pyrocystis Murray ex Haeckel are described. The two known species of Dissodinium, D. pseudolunula Swirl ex Elbr. & Dreb., (= D. lunula auct. nonnull.) and D. pseudocalani (GSnnert) Drebes ex Elb. & Dreb. are ectoparasites of copepod eggs. In this genus, sporogenesis, with obligate sequence from primary cyst to secondary cyst to dinospores, occurs by palintomy. Dissodinium is placed into the order Blastodiniales Schil… Show more

“…The NM division cells of V. rugosum do resemble those of Pfiesteria shumwayae Glasgow and Burkholder and P. piscicida Steidinger and Burkholder (Parrow & Burkholder 2003, 2004. However, division in the motile stages was not observed in Pfiesteria, Dissodinium, and Pyrocystis (Elbra¨chter & Drebes 1978;Parrow & Burkholder 2004). V. rugosum also differs from Gloeodinium montanum Klebs and Alexandrium hiranoi Kita and Fukuyo in that cyst division of the latter two species give rise to gametes for subsequent sexual conjugation (Kita et al 1993;Pfiester & Highfill 1993).…”

“…Asexual reproduction in cysts has been reported in species of Dissodinium Klebs and Pyrocystis Murray ex Haeckel (Elbra¨chter & Drebes 1978). V. rugosum differs from these species in that a new division cell wall is produced after each binary fission.…”

“…The tortuous taxonomy of the genus is given by Drebes (21) and Elbrachter and Drebes (94). There are several important characters that separate the genus from Chytrodinium, enough perhaps to warrant the creation of a separate family in the Blastodinida (21,94).…”
