“…Regarding medusae populations, it is noted that originally, the Mar Menor had a native population of Aurelia aurita L. (Franco and Gili 1989). However, since the mid 1980s, other species of cnidarians, most notably Cotylorhiza tuberculata, entered the lagoon from the Mediterranean, reaching to close its life's cycle in this lagoon.…”

“…As a consequence, several species of jellyfish began to be observed in this coastal lagoon, hitherto not mentioned in this lagoon's ecosystem. Among these species stands out the scyphozoan Cotylorhiza tuberculata (Macri 1778) that due to the new temperature and salinity conditions of the Mar Menor was able to close his life cycle within the lagoon (Fuentes et al 2011). A decade later, the proliferations of jellyfish were initiated in response to increased flow of nutrients and eutrophication of the lagoon ( Pérez-Ruzafa et al 2002), being captured in 2012, after 26 days of fishing at sea, the amount of 3,938,233 individuals of C. tuberculata in this lagoon (CARM 2013).…”

“…of the same year [34]. Our model aims to estimate how far the free-swimming forms (ephyrae and medusae) can disperse in this period of a few months.…”

“…For consistency across the tracked particles, we constrained the subsequent analysis of ocean connectivity to all those particles tracked for 120 days (see below). This is an appropriate timescale according to what is known about the Rhizostoma life cycle [34]. Sample areas were those where R. octopus blooms have been reported and sampled (see §2.2.).…”

“…Scyphozoans and hydrozoans have especially versatile reproductive strategies (Lucas, 2001;Boero et al, 2002;Fuentes et al, 2011). This versatility may predispose them to exploit changing conditions that may prove detrimental to other taxa.…”
