Library Classification: Relation Between Producer and Consumer

Abstract

Shows how specialisation in the field of knowledge, which is a dynamic continuum, cälls for the replacemeixt of enumerative classification by expressive, analytico-synthetic classification. Shows the inadequacy of carrying enumeration to the level of dependent foci by the Colon Classification and the need for· carrying it down to the level of fundamental categories. Pleads for the setting up of ä meta-language which is symbolic at least in vital parts, äs a ineans of establishing a firm foündation for classification which can cqnserve harmony between the clässifi-cationist and the specialist.]
