Orchids are an important part of plant biodiversity on the planet due to their high variability among species and their habitats. South America presents more than thirty percent of all known orchid species, being Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia between the richest countries in the world in terms of orchid biodiversity. Nevertheless, concerning to the orchid conservation status, in Colombia precisely orchids occupy the unlucky first place as the plant family with the highest number of threatened species. Similar situation is happening in the rest of the South American countries. The two main threats to orchid survival are both anthropogenic: the first one is deforestation, and the second largest threat to orchids is collection from the wild. One desirable action to safeguard these endangered species is to develop procedures that make possible their massive propagation, which should provide material for the eco-rehabilitation of specimens into their natural habitats, the exchange with other entities, the supply to orchid merchants for avoid extractions of nature, and the availability of material for future research. Likewise, the development of systems that allow the ex situ conservation of orchid germplasm is imperative. This chapter reviews the progresses of different in vitro approaches for orchid propagation and germplasm conservation, safeguarding the genetic biodiversity of these species. Several study cases are presented and described to exemplify the protocols developed in the Botanical Institute of Northeast (UNNE-CONICET) for propagating and long-term storing the germplasm of wild orchids from Argentina (Cattleya lundii, Cohniella cepula, Cohniella jonesiana, Gomesa bifolia, Aa achalensis, Cyrtopodium brandonianum, Cyrtopodium hatschbachii, Habenaria bractescens). Moreover, it has been attempted to put together most of the available literature on in vitro propagation and germplasm conservation for South American orchids using different explants and procedures. There are researches of good scientific quality that even cover critical insights into the physiology and factors affecting growth and development as well as storage of several orchid materials. Anyway, studies are still necessary to cover a mayor number of South American species as well as the use of selected material (clonal) for both propagation and conservation approaches.

Ecology of orchid species was studied, surveyed and characterized on Serra das Cabeças, a subunit of Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro (PESB), Araponga-MG, Brazil. Data were obtained through monthly visits on all trails of the area, from 2004 to 2014 covering different types of vegetation, collecting some species and identifying them. We observed characteristics such as type of vegetation, habitat where each species was found, intensity of luminosity, altitude and position of plants in relation to watercourses. Obtained results allowed to conclude: 80 species were identified, of which 45 had not been reported for PESB; five for the state of Minas Gerais, and four for Brazilian flora. Concerning habitat, 57.50% are epiphytic, 1.25% hemiepiphytic, 2.50% humic, 15.00% lithophytic and 23.75% terrestrial. Considering vegetation, 52.50% are located in upper montane forest, 1.25% understorey, 10.00% slope forest, 8.75% in transition forest to altitude field, and 27.50% in altitude field. The survey of Orchidaceae species of present study will allow updating the lists of species present in PESB and of Brazilian flora, recorded in Jardim Botânico in Rio de Janeiro State.

Ionocidium ‘Cerrado 101’: intergeneric orchid hybrid with high quality of blooming

Orchids are considered one of the most important potted-flowering in the world. Oncidium genus, as well their hybrids group (OHGs) has used for the flower market as pot or cut flower. However, some horticultural characteristics require improvements, e.g. the production of precocious cultivars, independent-season blooming or easy flowering induction, high quality and durability of flowers and variations in color of flowers, to compete with Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium orchids, as other flower groups. Aiming this purpose there were used hand-crossing pollination between the Oncidium 'Sweet Sugar' and Ionopsis utricularioides, a Brazilian wild species, for evaluate the capacity of crossing and to select progenies with interest of use in floriculture as new cultivar. The seeds obtained from this cross were seeded on in vitro conditions, followed by acclimatization and cultivation on greenhouse conditions until de flowering time. One of the plants obtained presented interesting characteristics, as good and rapid vegetative development and high quality of blooming. This hybrid obtained from an intergeneric crossing resulted in a plant with vegetative and flower type characteristics and color similar of Oncidium female parent, but with larger number of ramifications in inflorescence and number of flowers (60% and 219,4%, respectively) than Oncidium parent (♀), and with more similarity with Ionopsis (♂). This hybrid cultivar, called Ionocidium 'Cerrado 101' is one more option of OHGs in this competitive market and can be used either for pot and also for cut orchid flowers production, main because it longer inflorescence (83 cm). As orquídeas estão entre as mais importantes flores de vaso do mundo. O gênero Oncidium, assim como seus híbridos (OHGs), são plantas com grande potencial para o mercado de flores de corte ou vasos. Entretanto, esse grupo ainda requer a melhoria de algumas características horticulturais, como florescimento precoce, produção de inflorescências independente das estações do ano ou com facilidade na indução e controle do florescimento, além de alta qualidade e durabilidade das flores e produção de cultivares com colorações diferentes daquelas existentes. Essas condições são necessárias para que os Oncidium possam competir no mercado com orquídeas de outro gênero como Phalaenopsis e Dendrobium, bem como outras espécies de vaso e corte. Para tanto, foram realizados cruzamentos entre Oncidium 'Sweet Sugar' e uma espécie nativa do Brasil, Ionopsis utricularioides com o objetivo de determinar a capacidade de cruzamento por polinização manual controlada, e selecionar progênies de interesse para propagação clonal e uso na floricultura como nova cultivar.
