Leukocyte and thrombocyte reference values for channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus Raf), with an assessment of morphologic, cytochemical, and ultrastructural features

Abstract: The morphologic and staining features of neutrophils and monocytes of channel catfish are similar to those of mammals, and the presence of basophils in this species was verified. These reference intervals and morphologic findings provide a foundation for future investigations on the functions and alterations of blood cells in channel catfish.

“…Initially, as the parasite intensity was less, differences in the haematological parameters, serum biochemistry and other immunological parameters were not found to vary much among the different groups of fish. Similar findings have been reported in four Brazilian teleost fish species with parasitic infection (Tavares-Dias et al, 2007), Mugil platanum with parasitic monogenean or copepod (RanzaniPalva et al, 1997); in Piaractus mesopotamicus with Argulus sp. (Tavares-Dias et al, 1999) and Oreochromis niloticus infected with Trichodina sp.…”

“…However, for farmed I. punctatus Kn was higher than 1.00 (Tavares-Dias & Moraes, 2007). Therefore, this indicates good body condition of C. temensis in culture, making good use of the artificial feeding source in the fish farming.…”

“…Therefore, red blood cell parameters are useful measures of respiratory adaptation that could be used for fish living in different environments. Piscine blood leukocytes are the major cell components involved in immune response (Tavares-Dias & Moraes, 2007;Tavares-Dias et al, 2008). In general, among the leukocytes found are lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils and PAS-positive granular leukocytes (Tavares-Dias & Moraes, 2004), depending on species.…”

“…Nowadays, thrombocyte has been found to be an important cell involved in fish defenses (Matushima and Mariano, 1996;Martins et al, 2006;Tavares-Dias and Moraes, 2007;Bozzo et al, 2007). Besides the high number of lymphocytes, the injection of Enterococcus was found to incite more production of thrombocytes in the circulating blood.…”
