Entre imagens e textos: os manuais como práxis de saber ResumoProblematizamos uma série de gêneros textuais escritos durante o Iluminismo em Portugal, marcadamente entre 1720 e 1800, compreendendo-os na condição de manuais de saber, e apontamos alguns sentidos das imagens nesses escritos de ampla circulação no mundo lusobrasileiro.Palavras-chave: Iluminismo; manuais; cultura visual; história das ciências; técnica. AbstractWe investigate a series of writing genres from the Enlightenment in Portugal, especially between 1720 and 1800, comprehending them as manuals of knowledge, and we highlight some of the meanings of the images in these writings that were widely circulated in the Portuguese-speaking world.

This paper examines how and why information moved or failed to move within transatlantic botanical networks in the late eighteenth century. It addresses the problem of how practitioners created relationships of trust, and the difficulties they faced in transferring reputations between national contexts. Eighteenth-century botany was characteristically cross-cultural, cosmopolitan and socially diverse, yet in the 1770s and 1780s the American Revolutionary Wars placed these attributes under strain. The paper analyses the British and French networks that surrounded the Philadelphian plant hunter William Young (1742–1785), to show how botanists and plant collectors created and maintained connections with each other, especially when separated by geographical and cultural distance. It highlights in particular the role played by commercial plant traders, and demonstrates how practitioners used objects to transmit social as well as scholarly information. The transnational circulation of information and knowledge in the Enlightenment was determined by culturally specific judgements about trust, confidence, communication and risk. Despite the prominent role played by material culture within these networks, scholars continued to place high value on face-to-face contact as a means of judging the trustworthiness and cooperation of their agents.

Resumo: As instruções de viagem estão ligadas à necessidade de se estabelecer um método para a viagem, para torná-la mais adequada para cumprir o desejo de objetividade científica e de verdade em um momento em que a aquisição de conhecimento não estava mais ligada à aceitação pura e simples da tradição, mas através da prática e da reflexão. O objetivo deste artigo é ressaltar as interferências do subjetivo e do sujeito pitoresco na produção das instruções de viagem e o crescente interesse pelos quadros em movimento das sociedades visitadas, pinturas verbais que revelam sentimentos, ações e a vida moral da sociedade. Palavras-chave: Instruções; Literatura de Viagem; Viagens Pitorescas. Abstract:The instructions for travelers are related to the need to establish a method for the voyage, to make it more suitable to fulfill the desire of scientific objectivity and truth at a time in which the acquisition of knowledge was no longer linked to the pure acceptance and simple tradition, but through practice and reflection. The purpose of this article is to highlight the interference of subjectivity and picturesque subject in the production of travel instructions and the increasing interest in moving frames of the visited societies, verbal paintings that reveal feelings, actions and the moral life of society.
