The study investigated the influence of physical facilities on academic performance of community secondary schools students' in the form four national examinations in Longido District, Tanzania. The study was guided by one research question aimed at finding out how physical facilities influence academic performance of community secondary school students in form four national examinations. Social Learning Theory developed by Psychologist Albert Bandura in 1977 guided the study. Convergent design under mixed research method was adopted whereby probability and nonprobability sampling were used in selecting respondents. The target population for this study included 9 community secondary schools,9 heads of community secondary schools, 283 teachers and 1545 form four students in Longido District, Tanzania. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to obtain 4 schools, 32 teachers and 160 form four students where by 4 heads of community secondary schools were directly included from the study which make total of 196 respondents. Questionnaires, interview guides and document analysis guide were used to collect data from respondents. Cronbach Alpha was used to obtain reliability of quantitative data (r=0.78 for teachers' questionnaire and r=0.62 for students' questionnaire) While member checking and triangulation were used to obtain reliability of qualitative data. Quantitative data was analyzed and presented by using frequencies, percentages, means and tables while qualitative data were analyzed into words and developing themes from the research questions and presented in summaries and direct quotations. The study found out that shortage of school physical facilities like classrooms, dormitories, libraries, laboratories, dining halls and teaching and learning materials like books, chalks, manilas, laboratory apparatus and others influence poor academic performance of students. The study concluded that insufficient or sometimes absent of school physical facilities, had negative influence on students academic performance of form four students in national examinations in Longido District. The study recommends that government and all stakeholders to work together and collaborate in order to construct and provide school physical facilities in order to solve the problem of poor academic performance of students in examinations.

Understanding medical students’ transformative experiences of early preclinical international rural placement over a 20-year period

Introduction Rural placements are an important component of rural medical education programs seeking to develop rural practice pathways for medical students. These placements are usually domestic, but James Cook University in Australia developed an international rural placement program in the first half of the medical course that was funded through bursaries. This study explores how the international rural placement helped to shape the lives (personal development and learning) of the participants, using Transformational Learning Theory as a framework for identifying and describing the transformational elements, process and impact of the program. Methods Sixty-five students received a bursary for an international rural placement between 2001–2019. All were contacted by email and invited to participate in a short survey and a follow-up interview. Fifteen participants agreed and twelve were able to participate in individual semi-structured interviews which were recorded, transcribed and analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Results Participants reported that the bursary provided a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to “experience eye-opening and culturally rich difference”. Nonetheless, some elements of the placement experience presented disorientating dilemmas that triggered deep reflections and shifts in perceptions. The bursary recipients realised that “being open-minded” allowed them “enjoy good company”. They were also able to assume “outsider view which allowed reassessment of their own country” and the “isolation experiences gingered desire to right health wrongs”. The triggers and mental shifts had significant impact on the bursary recipients and fostered the development of “inspirational new horizons” based on an appreciation of the “value of rural practice” and “role-modelling for life-long learning.” These findings are consistent with Transformational Learning Theory. Conclusion Participants in this study reported meaningful and strongly positive impacts from the experiences gained during an international rural clinical placement early in their course. They described transformative experiences which appear to contribute strongly to personal development. This finding supports maintaining opportunities for international experiences during rurally-oriented medical programs as these may impact longer term career choice.

The current geopolitical situation in the world, and especially in Europe, highlights the sustainability of each society and country in the present dimension and sustainable development in the future. The ability of the society of the future to develop itself, to provide for the sovereignty of its country, to strengthen its economy, to raise its level of prosperity, to preserve and enrich its culture is shaped and developed in today's schools and universities as the next generations are learning and studying there. They will be managing the country in the future, taking care of sustainable development of the society, the economy of their country, its security and defence, being at the heart of our country's future society. Therefore, innovations in the content of general secondary education in Latvia are needed by introducing a new subject of National Defence Training in schools. The legal basis for this has already been prepared in the form of laws and other regulations. Model curricula for general secondary education and the Youth Guard have been developed. Since in global forums as well as in scientific publications at the end of the 20th century the ecological paradigm has been justified as a transdisciplinary paradigm, but the ecological approach in human thinking, in promoting the development of children/youth, in all kinds of activities (in all areas of human activity, including education) has been justified as an imperative, which has become more and more relevant in the 21st century, the aim of the research was to substantiate the diversity of ecological approaches in the education of young people in the field of national defence. The results of the research demonstrate that the ecological approach is visible in the development of the national defence content. It is also common in the justification for the many aspects of the national defence learning environment.
