Learning and Unlearning of Pain

Abstract: This review provides an overview of learning mechanisms and memory aspects for the development of chronic pain. Pain can be influenced in important ways by an individual’s personality, by family, and by the sociocultural environment in which they live. Therefore, learning mechanisms can explain why pain experience and pain behavior can increase or decrease. Linking pain with positive consequences or removing negative consequences can contribute significantly to the chronification of pain. We will provide an ov… Show more

“…Interestingly, decreased connectivity within the AN was also observed in CM patients. It is possible that central sensitization caused by constant noxious input can attenuate the perception of sensory inputs, leading to the neurological symptoms commonly experienced by CM patients, such as phonophobia (35,36).…”

“…Project partners presented their previous work related to behavioural treatment approaches and conferred on the guiding principles for the prototype development. The group reached consensus on using learning theory36 as the theoretical framework for assessment and treatment. Furthermore, it was agreed that the fear-avoidance model11 and psychological flexibility model10 14 37 should be used as conceptual models for the DAHLIA treatment.…”
