Layered Manufacturing of Dental Ceramics: Fracture Mechanics, Microstructure, and Elemental Composition of Lithography‐Sintered Ceramic

Abstract: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it can be concluded that LCM seems to be a promising technique for final ceramic object manufacturing in dental applications. Both the manufacturing method and the material used should be improved.

“…Given for their ease of machining, most of the commercial systems utilize presintered zirconia blocks for milling restorations . However, the restoration is subjected to dimensional changes due to thermal shrinkage associated with subsequent sintering, which can jeopardize the spatial integrity of the restoration . Furthermore, a major proportion of the prefabricated ceramic block is discarded at the culmination of the CNC milling process …”

“…Layer wise composition of the final restoration prevents the accumulation of tooling stresses associated with milling . Moreover, AM facilitates the production of complex geometries with fine details that cannot be reproduced by other methods . To date, there exists limited research pertaining to the application of AM for the fabrication of dental ceramics and the technology has not been commercially proclaimed for this purpose .…”
