Lavender fragrance sol‐gel encapsulated in ORMOSIL nanospheres

Abstract: Lavender fragrance (LF) was encapsulated successfully in ORMOSIL (organically modified silica) via the sol‐gel approach. Silane precursor‐ethylsilicate (TEOS) was modified with methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) to enhance the mechanical strength and compatibility of the wall material. Hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) was added as surfactant and polymer for the formation of nanospheres. An encapsulation efficiency of 96.36% was achieved under optimal conditions (water/ethanol ratio of 2 : 1, with pH 9.5,… Show more

“…The preparation of silica microcapsules often uses the sol-gel method. [95][96][97] This method requires relatively low conditions for preparing nanosilica. However, some of the raw materials used are organic substances (such as ammonia), which are harmful to the human body and the environment.…”

“…For example, microcapsules are a commonly used physical method of sustained release of a fragrance, using the shell to separate the active and volatile aromatic compounds from the outside environment, [4][5][6] and some further applications of encapsulated aromatic compounds on various fabric surfaces have also been reported by our group. [7][8][9][10] Another method is to generate fragrance precursors (so-called "profragrances"). 11,12 The profragrance system consists of fragrances and substrates bonded together, and the perfume molecules are gradually released once triggered by moisture, heat, light, enzymes and so on with the tunable release rate controlled by the intensity of the stimulus.…”
